Applying for a Canada visa from Jordan is an online process with one physical step in Amman: giving your biometrics at the Canada Visa Application Centre (VAC) run by VFS Global. In this guide you will learn exactly how Jordanian citizens and residents of Jordan apply for a visitor visa, study permit, work permit, family sponsorship or permanent residence, what the VAC in Amman does and does not do, which Jordanian documents to prepare and how to translate them, the government fees in Canadian dollars with approximate dinar equivalents, realistic processing times, and the mistakes that most often lead to refusals for applicants from Jordan.

Everything below reflects IRCC rules and fees published for 2025-2026. Fees, forms and processing times change regularly, so confirm the current figures on the official IRCC website before you pay or submit.

Do Jordanians need a visa for Canada?

Yes. Jordanian passport holders are not visa-exempt and cannot use the electronic travel authorisation (eTA), which is reserved for citizens of visa-exempt countries such as the UAE when they fly to Canada. The same is true for most nationals living in Jordan, including holders of Iraqi, Syrian, Egyptian and Yemeni passports and Palestinian travel documents. A valid US, UK or Schengen visa does not replace a Canadian visa, although it helps as travel history. What you apply for depends on the purpose and length of your stay:

Which Canadian application Jordanian citizens and residents need, by purpose of travel
Purpose of travelWhat to apply forKey points
Tourism, visiting relatives, business meetings, conferencesVisitor visa (TRV), normally multiple-entryValid up to 10 years; each entry usually allows a stay of up to 6 months; CAD 100 + biometrics

Short courses of six months or less can be done on a visitor visa, but anything longer needs a study permit. When a study or work permit is approved, IRCC places a visitor visa in your passport at the same time so that you can travel. For the full visitor-visa requirements see our Canada visitor visa guide, and for an overview of every permanent pathway see the complete guide to immigration to Canada.

How the Canada visa process works from Jordan

Whatever the category, the journey from Jordan has three parts: an online application in your IRCC secure account, a biometrics appointment at the VAC in Amman, and, after approval, a passport submission to the same VAC so that the visa can be placed in your passport. Here is the sequence in practice:

  1. 1

    Choose the right application

Check the eligibility rules for the visitor visa, super visa, study permit, work permit, sponsorship or permanent-residence programme that matches your real purpose. Applying in the wrong category is refused no matter how strong the documents are.

  2. 2

    Gather and translate your documents

Collect your passport, family book, civil status certificates, employment letter, bank statements, property documents and any invitation letter, and have every Arabic document translated by a certified translator into English or French.

  3. 3

Create your IRCC secure account and complete the forms

Register through GCKey or a Sign-In Partner, answer the eligibility questionnaire, complete the online forms (for visitors, the IMM 5257 application and the IMM 5707 family information form) and upload clear colour scans of each document.

  4. 4

Pay the fees online in Canadian dollars

The application fee and the biometrics fee are paid together inside the account by credit or debit card. The VAC in Amman does not collect government fees.

  5. 5

Receive the biometrics instruction letter and book the VAC

Once the file is submitted and paid, IRCC issues a Biometrics Instruction Letter (BIL) in your account. Book an appointment on the VFS Global portal for the Amman centre within the deadline in the letter, normally 30 days.

  6. 6

    Give your biometrics in Amman

Attend with your original passport, the printed letter and the appointment confirmation. Fingerprints and a digital photo are taken in a few minutes.

  7. 7

Track the file and answer every request

IRCC may ask for a medical exam, additional documents or a clarification with a short deadline. Processing time officially starts once the file is complete and the biometrics are received.

  8. 8

Submit your passport for the visa

If approved, a passport request letter appears in your account. Hand your passport to the VAC in Amman with a copy of the letter, then collect it, or receive it by courier, with the visa counterfoil inside.

The Canada Visa Application Centre (VAC) in Amman

The Canada VAC in Amman is operated by VFS Global, a private company contracted by IRCC. It is a service point, not a decision-making office: the staff collect biometrics and passports and forward them, but they never see the merits of your file and cannot influence the outcome. Understanding the limits of the VAC saves you wasted visits and unrealistic expectations.

What the VAC in Amman does

  • Collects biometrics (fingerprints and photo) for all IRCC applications, by appointment booked online.
  • Receives your passport after a passport request and returns it to you once the visa counterfoil has been placed.
  • Offers optional paid services such as courier return of the passport, SMS updates, photocopying, photographs and assistance with form-filling.
  • Accepts paper applications only in the limited cases where IRCC exempts an applicant from applying online.

What the VAC does not do

  • It does not assess your file or decide anything; approval and refusal are decided by IRCC officers only.
  • It cannot advise you on eligibility, on which documents will strengthen your case, or on why a previous application was refused.
  • It cannot speed up processing, check your status for you or contact the visa office on your behalf.
  • It generally does not receive visitors without an appointment and never collects IRCC government fees.

Appointments are booked online on the VFS Global portal after you receive your biometrics instruction letter. Opening hours and the exact location change from time to time, so check the VFS Global Canada Jordan page for the current address, hours and public-holiday closures before you travel, especially if you are coming from Irbid, Zarqa, Aqaba or from outside Jordan.

Passport submission and return after approval

When IRCC approves a visitor visa, study permit or work permit, you receive a passport request letter in your account. You then submit your original passport, with a copy of the letter, to the VAC in Amman, which forwards it to the visa office for the visa counterfoil and returns it for collection or by courier. The study or work permit itself is printed at the Canadian airport on arrival, so keep the approval letter with you when you fly. Our guide to travelling to Canada explains what happens at the border.

Biometrics in Amman: who needs them, fee and validity

Biometrics are your fingerprints and a digital photo, collected once and reused across applications. Almost every applicant from Jordan aged 14 to 79 must give biometrics for a visitor visa, super visa, study permit, work permit or permanent residence. The fee is CAD 85 per person, capped at CAD 170 per family applying together at the same time, and it is paid online with your application fee. Biometrics are valid for 10 years. The fee covers the collection itself; the VAC charges separately only for optional extras you choose.

Who is exempt from biometrics

  • Children under 14 and applicants over 79 are exempt for temporary-resident applications.
  • If you gave biometrics in the last 10 years for a visitor visa, study permit or work permit and they are still valid, you normally do not give them again for another temporary application; the status is shown in your IRCC account when you apply.
  • Permanent-residence applicants must give biometrics with the PR application even if they gave them earlier for a visitor visa.
  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents and eTA applicants do not give biometrics.

Practical tips for your Amman appointment

  • Book as soon as the biometrics instruction letter arrives; you normally have 30 days to attend, and summer slots in Amman fill quickly.
  • Bring your original passport, the printed instruction letter and the appointment confirmation; a national ID card is not accepted instead of the passport.
  • Postpone if you have cuts, burns or fresh henna on your fingers; damaged prints are rejected and you would need a second appointment.
  • The photo must show the whole face: remove glasses, keep the hijab clear of the face line and avoid hair across the eyes.
  • Family members applying together can book consecutive slots; children under 14 do not need to attend, but each adult must.

Not sure whether your previous biometrics are still valid, or which family members have to attend? Our biometrics registration service for Canada checks your file, books the VFS Global appointment and prepares you for the visit.

Documents checklist for applicants in Jordan

IRCC publishes a different checklist for each application type, but applicants from Jordan tend to rely on the same core evidence. The list below combines the IRCC requirements with the Jordan-specific documents that officers expect to see from applicants in Amman. Scan every document in colour, keep each file under the size limit shown in your account, and name the files clearly.

  • Passport valid well beyond your planned stay (ideally two years or more), plus old passports showing previous visas and entry stamps
  • Jordanian civil status ID card and the relevant pages of the family book (دفتر العائلة) establishing marital status and children
  • Birth, marriage and, where relevant, divorce certificates issued by the Civil Status and Passports Department, with certified translations
  • Employment letter on company letterhead stating position, salary, start date, approved leave dates and a verifiable phone number
  • Social Security Corporation (الضمان الاجتماعي) contribution statement as independent proof of your employment history
  • Bank statements for the last 6 months in JOD, stamped by the bank, showing salary deposits and a stable balance
  • For business owners: commercial registration, professional licence, company bank statements and recent income tax returns
  • Property evidence: land registration deed from the Department of Lands and Survey, vehicle registration, rental contracts
  • Invitation letter from Canada with the inviter's status (citizenship certificate or PR card copy), address, relationship to you and who pays for the trip
  • Travel itinerary with refundable hotel booking and a flight reservation (do not buy non-refundable tickets before the decision)
  • Students and employees: enrolment letter or leave approval confirming the return date
  • Completed online forms (IMM 5257 and IMM 5707 for visitors) and a digital photo meeting IRCC specifications
  • Travel history: copies of Schengen, UK, US or Gulf visas and residence permits, with exit and entry stamps
  • For a study permit: letter of acceptance from a DLI, provincial attestation letter, tuition receipt and proof of living funds
  • For a work permit: job offer, LMIA number or LMIA-exemption code and employer compliance details
  • For sponsorship: relationship evidence, sponsor's status and forms listed in the IRCC sponsorship checklist

Certified translation and notarisation of Arabic documents

IRCC accepts documents only in English or French. Any Arabic document, whether it is your family book, a bank letter or a marriage certificate, must be uploaded together with a translation produced by a certified translator and a copy of the original. If the translator is not certified, IRCC requires a sworn affidavit from the translator; most applicants in Jordan avoid that complication by using a certified translation office from the start. Translations prepared by the applicant, a relative or the inviter are not accepted.

  • Family book, civil status ID and the civil status extract listing all family members.
  • Birth, marriage and divorce certificates issued by the Civil Status and Passports Department.
  • Employment letters, salary slips and the Social Security Corporation contribution statement.
  • Bank statements and bank letters issued in Arabic, including stamped balance confirmations.
  • Commercial registration, professional licences and company contracts for business owners.
  • Police clearance certificates (شهادة عدم محكومية) for permanent-residence applicants, academic certificates and transcripts, and court documents such as custody or guardianship orders.

Some documents must also be notarised. A consent letter from a parent who stays behind while a child travels, a statutory declaration about a common-law relationship or a sponsorship undertaking are typically signed before a Jordanian notary public (كاتب العدل) before translation. VisaPres provides certified legal translation accepted by 19 embassies, together with signature authentication, so that the translation and the notarised original are prepared as one consistent package.

Proof of funds and ties for Jordanian and resident applicants

For every temporary application the officer must be satisfied that you have enough money for the trip and that you will leave Canada at the end of your authorised stay. Applicants from Jordan are refused most often on exactly these two points, so the financial and ties evidence deserves more attention than any other part of the file.

Showing funds in Jordanian dinar

Statements in JOD from a Jordanian bank are perfectly acceptable. What matters is the history, not the currency: six months of statements showing regular salary deposits and a stable balance are far more convincing than a large balance that appeared last week. If a big deposit is genuine, such as an end-of-service payment, the sale of a car or land, or a gift from a parent, attach the proof (sale contract, the employer's settlement letter, a signed gift letter with the donor's own statement). Do not borrow money to inflate a balance; officers look at the opening balance and the trend, and unexplained deposits are a stated refusal reason.

Ties to Jordan that officers look for

  • Stable employment confirmed by a letter stating your position, salary, start date and approved leave, supported by Social Security records.
  • A business you own and run, proven by commercial registration, licences and company bank activity.
  • Property or land in your name, a vehicle, or long-term rental income.
  • Immediate family remaining in Jordan: a spouse and children listed in the family book who are not travelling with you.
  • Ongoing studies in Jordan with an enrolment letter confirming the return date.
  • A travel history of visits to Schengen countries, the UK, the US or the Gulf with timely returns.

Palestinian travel documents and residents of Jordan with other nationalities

Jordan is home to many residents who hold temporary Jordanian passports without a national number, Palestinian Authority passports, or the passports of Iraq, Syria, Egypt, Yemen and other countries. You can apply from Jordan through the same online account and the Amman VAC as long as you are legally resident in Jordan. IRCC assesses you on the same criteria, but two points receive closer scrutiny: that your travel document is valid and accepted for travel to Canada, and that your ties to your country of residence and, where relevant, your country of citizenship are real. Upload your residency permit or annual residence card, proof of legal status in Jordan, and the same funds and employment evidence as a citizen. Documents issued in Gaza or the West Bank, or in Syria and Iraq, may be hard to obtain; explain any gap in a letter rather than leaving it unaddressed, and ask about accepted alternatives before you submit.

Canada visa fees in CAD and JOD, processing times and tracking

Government fees in Canadian dollars and approximate dinars

All IRCC fees are paid online in Canadian dollars with a credit or debit card when you submit; the VAC does not collect government fees. The dinar amounts below are indicative only and exclude translations, the medical exam, courier charges and any optional VAC services.

Processing times for applications from Jordan

IRCC publishes processing times by application type and by the country from which you apply, and for Jordan they vary widely: a visitor visa can take a few weeks in a quiet period and several months in peak season, which means the summer holidays, the weeks before Christmas and the run-up to the September university intake. Study permits should be filed at least three to four months before the programme starts, and family sponsorship and Express Entry files are measured in months rather than weeks. The clock starts when your biometrics are received and the file is complete, not when you create the account. Check the current estimate on the official visit Canada page and the processing-times tool before you book non-refundable travel.

How to track your application

  • Your IRCC secure account shows the status and all correspondence; switch on e-mail notifications so that you never miss a biometrics, medical or passport request.
  • The IRCC application status tracker gives a plain-language view of visitor, study, work and sponsorship applications.
  • A passport request letter means in practice that the application is approved; a procedural-fairness letter means the officer has concerns and you have a short deadline to respond.
  • If you are refused and want the real reasons, your authorised Canadian representative can request the GCMS notes under access-to-information rules.

Special cases: family in Canada, students, workers and previous refusals

Extra evidence and typical pitfalls for the most common situations of applicants from Jordan
SituationKey extra evidenceTypical pitfall
Visiting a child, sibling or relative in CanadaInvitation letter, inviter's citizenship or PR proof, address, statement of who paysWeak ties in Jordan; relying only on the inviter's money
Parents of citizens or PRs who want long staysSuper visa: child's income at the LICO level, CAD 100,000 medical insurance, medical examApplying for a normal visitor visa when a super visa fits better

Workers with a Canadian job offerJob offer, LMIA or LMIA-exemption code, employer compliancePaying an agent for a fake job offer
Previous refusalGCMS notes, new evidence answering each refusal reason, letter of explanationResubmitting the same file unchanged

Family visits are the most common application from Jordan. Having a relative in Canada is a legitimate purpose, and a pending or planned sponsorship does not bar a visitor visa because dual intent is legal, but you must be transparent about it. Learn how the permanent route works in our family sponsorship guide and, for parents, in the parents and grandparents super visa guide.

Students from Jordan now follow the regular stream, since the Student Direct Stream closed in November 2024, and most need a provincial attestation letter in addition to the acceptance letter; see our study permit guide. Workers need a genuine employer and, in most cases, an LMIA; Jordan does not participate in International Experience Canada, so there is no working-holiday option, and anyone asking you to pay thousands of dollars for a job offer is almost certainly running a scam. Our work permit guide explains the legitimate routes. If you have been refused before, do not simply reapply: read why Canada visas are refused and how to reapply and fix the specific weaknesses first. Skilled professionals who want permanent residence should start with the Express Entry guide.

Common mistakes Jordanian applicants make

After reviewing files from Amman for many years, the same avoidable errors appear again and again:

  • Applying in the wrong category, for example a visitor visa for a nine-month language course or a study permit for a two-week training.
  • Uploading Arabic documents without a certified translation, or translations whose names do not match the passport spelling.
  • Bank statements with a sudden large deposit and no explanation, or a balance borrowed from a relative for the application.
  • Employment letters that omit the salary, the start date or the approved leave dates, or that are not on letterhead with a verifiable phone number.
  • Leaving family members out of the IMM 5707 family information form, or giving different marital details in different forms.
  • Hiding a previous refusal from Canada, the US, the UK or a Schengen country; IRCC shares data with partner countries and an undisclosed refusal is treated as misrepresentation.
  • Buying non-refundable tickets or paying tuition before the decision, then pressuring the VAC or the embassy for a faster answer they cannot give.
  • Missing the 30-day biometrics window or the deadline on a procedural-fairness letter, which usually ends the application.
  • Letting an unlicensed agent submit the file from their own account or e-mail, so that you never see the messages or the refusal reasons.
  • Submitting a passport that is about to expire, which limits the visa validity to months instead of years.

How VisaPres in Amman can help with your Canada visa

VisaPres is an immigration consultancy and legal services office in Amman, led by Dr. Maher Al-Dairi, a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) with more than 25 years of experience in Canadian immigration. Because the office is on Wasfi Al-Tal Street, a short drive from the VAC, we handle the whole local process in one place, in Arabic and English: the online file, the translations, the biometrics appointment and the passport submission.

  • Eligibility assessment: which Canadian application (visitor, super visa, study, work, sponsorship, Express Entry or PNP) fits you, before you spend a dinar on fees.
  • Preparation, typing and submission of the complete online application from your own IRCC account, with a document review for consistency.
  • Certified legal translation of family books, civil status certificates, bank and employment letters, accepted by 19 embassies, plus notary and signature authentication.
  • Biometrics guidance: checking whether you need them, booking the VFS Global appointment in Amman and preparing families with children.
  • Letters of explanation and invitation templates tailored to Jordanian circumstances, including temporary passports, residents of other nationalities and newly established businesses.
  • GCMS notes requests and a reapplication strategy after a refusal.
  • Study permit admissions and attestation-letter coordination, work permit and LMIA support for employers, and family sponsorship files for spouses, children and parents.
  • Follow-up of your file until the passport is returned, with support in the office or online.

VisaPres does not promise approvals; nobody can. What a properly prepared file does is remove the avoidable refusal reasons so that the officer judges your real circumstances. Start with our Canada visa application service or contact the office on WhatsApp at 00962777626232.

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply for a Canada visa at the Canadian Embassy in Amman?
No. The Canadian Embassy in Amman does not accept walk-in visa applications. All applications are submitted online through the IRCC secure account, biometrics are given at the VFS Global Visa Application Centre in Amman, and the passport is submitted to the same centre after approval.
Where do I give biometrics for a Canada visa in Jordan?
At the Canada Visa Application Centre in Amman operated by VFS Global. You book the appointment online after IRCC issues your biometrics instruction letter, normally within 30 days, and bring your original passport and the printed letter. Check the VFS Global Canada Jordan page for the current address and opening hours.
How much does a Canada visitor visa cost from Jordan in dinars?
The government fee is CAD 100 for the visitor visa plus CAD 85 for biometrics, about 95 to 100 Jordanian dinars in total depending on the exchange rate. Families pay a maximum of CAD 170 for biometrics when they apply together. Translations, courier and optional VAC services are extra, and fees should be verified on the IRCC website before paying.
How long does a Canada visa take from Jordan?
It varies widely with the application type and the season: a visitor visa from Jordan can take a few weeks in quiet periods and several months in summer or before the September intake. Processing starts after your biometrics are received and the file is complete. Check the IRCC processing-times tool for the current estimate before booking travel.
Do I need to translate my family book and bank statements for a Canada visa?
Yes. Every Arabic document, including the family book, civil status certificates, employment letters and bank statements, must be translated into English or French by a certified translator and uploaded with a copy of the original. Translations by the applicant or a relative are not accepted.
Can Palestinians living in Jordan apply for a Canada visa from Amman?
Yes, as long as you are legally resident in Jordan. Holders of temporary Jordanian passports, Palestinian Authority passports or other nationalities apply through the same online IRCC account and give biometrics in Amman. Expect closer attention to the validity of your travel document, your residency status and your ties to Jordan.
Does a US or Schengen visa help my Canada visa application from Jordan?
It does not replace a Canadian visa, but a history of visas to the US, the UK, Schengen countries or the Gulf with timely returns is strong evidence of compliance. Include copies of the visas and the entry and exit stamps. A previous refusal anywhere must be declared.
What happens after my Canada visa is approved and how do I get my passport back?
IRCC sends a passport request letter in your account. You submit your passport to the VAC in Amman with a copy of the letter, the visa counterfoil is placed inside, and the passport is returned for collection or by courier. Study and work permits are printed at the Canadian airport when you arrive.
