The Canada visitor visa, officially the Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), is the document most citizens of Jordan and the Arab world need before flying to Canada for tourism, a family visit, business meetings or a short course. In this guide you will learn who needs a TRV and who only needs an eTA, which documents the visa officer expects, how proof of funds is assessed, the fees and processing times for 2026, and how to submit the online application step by step. We also cover what happens after approval and why so many applications from the region are refused.
The guidance reflects IRCC rules published for 2026 and the daily experience of VisaPres, an immigration consultancy in Amman led by Dr. Maher Al-Dairi, a Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant (RCIC) with more than 25 years of experience in Canadian visa files.
Who needs a Canada visitor visa and who only needs an eTA?
Canada divides nationalities into visa-required and visa-exempt. Visa-exempt travellers arriving by air apply online for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) for CAD 7, usually approved within minutes. Everyone else needs a TRV in their passport before travelling. Citizens of almost every Arab country are visa-required, with the notable exception of the United Arab Emirates.
| Nationality | What you need | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Jordan | Visitor visa (TRV) | Biometrics at the VAC in Amman |
| Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman | Visitor visa (TRV) | VFS Global centres in Riyadh, Jeddah, Kuwait City, Doha, Manama and Muscat |
| United Arab Emirates (citizens) | eTA only (air travel) | UAE residents holding other passports still need a TRV |
| Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine | Visitor visa (TRV) | VACs in Cairo, Erbil, Beirut or Amman |
| Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Sudan, Yemen | Visitor visa (TRV) | Standard online application |
| Morocco | eTA in limited cases, otherwise TRV | eTA only with a valid US non-immigrant visa or a Canadian visa in the last 10 years, travelling by air |
If you are unsure, use the checker on the IRCC eTA page. A visa or eTA is linked to the passport you applied with; if you renew your passport you must apply again. Our guide to travelling to Canada explains both documents and what to expect at the airport.
Types of Canada visitor visa: single entry, multiple entry, super visa and transit
A TRV comes in a few variations, and knowing them helps you plan trips over several years rather than one visit at a time.
- Multiple-entry visa: the standard outcome. IRCC considers every applicant for a multiple-entry visa valid for up to 10 years, or until one month before your passport expires, whichever comes first.
- Single-entry visa: issued only in limited situations such as a one-time event; it becomes void after your first departure from Canada (except trips to the United States and back).
- Super visa: a multiple-entry visa for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents, allowing stays of up to 5 years per entry. It requires Canadian medical insurance of at least CAD 100,000, a medical exam and proof that your child meets the minimum income. See our super visa and parents sponsorship guide.
- Transit visa: for visa-required travellers passing through a Canadian airport for less than 48 hours; usually fee-free, but confirm the rules on IRCC before booking a connection.
How long can you stay on a visitor visa?
Visa validity and length of stay are different things. A 10-year visa does not let you live in Canada for 10 years. On each arrival the border officer decides how long you may stay, by default up to 6 months; the officer may write a shorter date in your passport or issue a visitor record. If nothing is written, your authorised stay ends 6 months after entry.
Canada visa requirements: what the visa officer looks for
The legal test is simple to state and hard to prove: the officer must be satisfied that you are a genuine temporary resident who will leave Canada at the end of your stay (Regulation 179(b)). Every document in your file should answer one of four questions.
1. Is the purpose of the visit clear and credible?
Tourism, visiting a sibling, a conference, a business meeting or a short English course are all acceptable. The purpose must be specific, consistent with your profile and supported by evidence: an itinerary with hotel bookings, an invitation letter, a conference registration or a letter from the Canadian company you will meet. 'Tourism for two months' with no plan weakens an application.
2. Can you afford the trip without working in Canada?
You must show that you can pay for flights, accommodation and daily expenses, and that this spending is reasonable relative to your income. There is no official minimum amount; officers look at the overall picture, explained in the proof-of-funds section below.
3. Do you have strong ties to your home country?
Ties are the reasons you will go back: a stable job with approved leave, a business you run, a spouse and children who stay behind, property, ongoing studies or elderly parents you care for. Applicants from Jordan, Egypt, Iraq and Syria are assessed carefully on this point, so documenting ties is not optional.
4. What does your travel history say?
Previous trips to the United States, the United Kingdom, the Schengen area or the Gulf with timely returns show that you respect visa conditions. Limited travel history is not a refusal ground by itself, but the other three pillars must then be stronger. Any previous refusal, overstay or removal from any country must be declared; hiding it is misrepresentation.
Canada tourist visa documents: the complete checklist
Below is the document set we prepare for a typical visitor visa file from Jordan or the Gulf. Not every item applies to everyone, but a complete, well-organised package is the single biggest factor you control.
- Passport valid for the whole planned stay with at least one blank page, plus copies of old passports showing visas and stamps
- Application for Temporary Resident Visa (IMM 5257), completed and validated
- Family Information form (IMM 5707) listing parents, spouse and all children, even if not travelling
- Digital photo meeting IRCC specifications
- Bank statements for the last 4-6 months, stamped by the bank, in your name
- Employment letter stating position, salary, start date and approved leave, on letterhead with contact details
- For business owners: commercial registration, licence, recent tax filings and company statements
- Proof of property, vehicles or investments in your home country
- Invitation letter from your host with their status document (citizenship certificate, PR card or permit) and proof of address
- Itinerary: round-trip flight reservation (do not buy a non-refundable ticket before approval) and hotel bookings
- Marriage certificate, children's birth certificates or the Jordanian family book to prove family ties
- Certified translations into English or French of every Arabic document, attached to a copy of the original
- Consent letter from the non-travelling parent(s) for minors travelling alone or with one parent
- Cover letter summarising the purpose of the trip, the funding and your ties
What an invitation letter for a Canada visa should contain
An invitation letter is not mandatory, but for family visits it is expected and strengthens the file when done properly. Signed and dated by your host in Canada, it should state:
- Your full name, date of birth, address and relationship to the host
- The purpose of the visit, planned arrival and departure dates and where you will stay
- The host's full name, address, telephone, occupation and immigration status, with a copy of their status document
- Whether the host will cover expenses and, if so, proof of their income such as a recent Notice of Assessment
- The other people living in the host's household
Translations and certified copies
IRCC accepts documents only in English or French. An Arabic bank letter, employment certificate, family book or marriage certificate must be accompanied by a complete certified translation and a copy of the original. Poor or partial translations are a frequent cause of document requests and delays. VisaPres provides certified legal translation accepted by 19 embassies, including the Canadian Embassy.
Proof of funds for a Canada visitor visa explained
Officers do not look for one magic number. They compare the cost of your trip with your financial history and ask whether the money is really yours and available. A realistic budget for a two-week trip for one person, including flights from the Middle East, is a few thousand Canadian dollars; longer stays and family trips cost proportionally more. What matters is that the balance has built up over time from identifiable income.
| Applicant profile | What convinces the officer | What raises concern |
|---|---|---|
| Salaried employee in Amman visiting a sister for 3 weeks | 6 months of statements with regular salary deposits, savings of several thousand dinars, employment letter with approved leave, sister's invitation and income proof | Large transfer from a relative two weeks before applying; no employment letter |
| Business owner from Saudi Arabia on a 10-day business trip | Commercial registration, company statements, personal savings, letter from the Canadian company, return booking | Cash deposits with no source; declared income that does not match lifestyle |
| Retired parent from Egypt visiting a son for 4 months | Pension statements, son's invitation with a Notice of Assessment, property deed, medical insurance | No pension or savings evidence, no insurance for a long stay, unclear return plan |
Canada visa fee and processing time in 2026
Government fees are paid online by card when you submit and are non-refundable even if the visa is refused.
| Item | Fee (CAD) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Visitor visa (TRV) processing fee | 100 | Per person, including children |
| Biometrics | 85 | Per person; maximum 170 per family applying together; valid 10 years |
| eTA (visa-exempt travellers only) | 7 | Not applicable to visa-required nationals |
| Super visa | 100 + biometrics | Plus medical insurance and medical exam costs |
| Visitor record (extension of stay) | 100 | Apply from inside Canada at least 30 days before your status expires |
| VAC service fee for biometrics | Varies | Charged by VFS Global in local currency |
How long does a Canada visitor visa take?
There is no fixed processing time. IRCC publishes country estimates on its processing times tool, and the figure for Jordan and other Arab countries has ranged from a few weeks to several months depending on season and volume. IRCC does not start assessing the file until your biometrics are received, so book the VAC appointment quickly. Files are often processed by IRCC's global network rather than the office in your country, which explains why timelines differ between applicants. Apply at least 3-4 months before a planned trip, and earlier for summer travel, weddings and graduations.
How to apply for a Canada visitor visa online: step by step
Almost all visitor visa applications are submitted through the IRCC secure account or the IRCC Portal. Paper applications and walk-ins at the Embassy in Amman are not accepted.
- 1
Create your IRCC account
Register with GCKey or a Sign-In Partner on canada.ca, or use the IRCC Portal if directed. Answer the eligibility questionnaire honestly; it generates your personal document checklist.
- 2
Complete the forms
Fill in IMM 5257 (Application for Temporary Resident Visa) and IMM 5707 (Family Information). Answer every question, match dates to your passport and previous applications, and validate the forms before upload. One inconsistency can trigger a refusal or a misrepresentation finding.
- 3
Upload supporting documents
Scan each document clearly in colour, combine related pages into one PDF where required, and attach certified translations to copies of the originals. Use the optional client information slot for your cover letter.
- 4
Pay the fees
Pay CAD 100 for the visa and CAD 85 for biometrics (170 maximum per family) by card and keep the receipt.
- 5
Give biometrics at the VAC
Within days you receive a Biometrics Instruction Letter (BIL). Book an appointment on the VFS Global website for the Canada Visa Application Centre in Amman, Cairo, Dubai, Riyadh or the centre nearest you, and bring your passport and the BIL. The appointment takes about 15 minutes.
- 6
Respond to requests
Check your account regularly. IRCC may ask for additional documents, a medical exam or an interview, with short deadlines. Do not book non-refundable travel yet.
- 7
Passport request and visa issuance
If approved, you receive a Passport Request letter. Submit your passport to the VAC so the visa counterfoil can be placed inside, then check the name, passport number, validity and number of entries before travelling.
Applicants from Jordan will find a detailed walk-through of the VAC in Amman and local document tips in our guide to applying for a Canada visa from Jordan.
Biometrics and medical exam
Biometrics (fingerprints and a photo) are mandatory for most applicants aged 14 to 79 and remain valid for 10 years, so you may not need to repeat them if you gave them for a previous Canadian application. Our team offers biometrics registration guidance if you are unsure of your status. A medical exam by an IRCC panel physician is not normally required for a short visit; it becomes necessary if you will stay 6 months or longer and have lived in a designated country, if you will work in healthcare or child care, and always for a super visa.
After approval: validity, entering Canada and extending your stay
Approval is not the end of the process. The visa lets you travel to a Canadian port of entry; the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officer there decides whether to admit you and for how long.
At the port of entry
- Carry the documents you submitted: invitation letter, proof of funds, return ticket and accommodation details. Officers do ask for them.
- Answer questions about the purpose and length of your visit consistently with your application, and declare currency of CAD 10,000 or more and all food, plant and animal products.
- Check the stamp or any handwritten date; if nothing is written, you may stay up to 6 months.
Extending your visit with a visitor record
If you need to stay longer, for example to help a daughter after childbirth, apply online for a visitor record at least 30 days before your authorised stay ends (fee CAD 100). While it is pending you keep your status under maintained-status rules, but you cannot leave and re-enter on that basis. A visitor record is not a visa: it does not allow re-entry after you leave, and if your TRV has expired you will need a new one to return.
Visiting family in Canada and dual intent
Many applicants from the Arab world apply for a visitor visa while a family sponsorship or an Express Entry profile is in progress. Canadian law recognises dual intent: wanting to become a permanent resident later does not disqualify you from a temporary visa, as long as you will leave at the end of the authorised stay if the permanent application is not approved. Declare the pending application, explain why the visit is temporary (a wedding, a new grandchild, the holidays) and show your ties and return plan.
The same applies to spouses of Canadian citizens and permanent residents waiting for an outland sponsorship decision. A visitor visa is possible but not automatic, and weak ties commonly lead to refusal. If you are in this situation, read our family sponsorship guide and consider having the application prepared professionally, because the file must explain the relationship and the temporary purpose at the same time.
Common reasons a Canada visitor visa is refused and how to avoid them
IRCC refusal letters almost always cite the same handful of grounds. Knowing them in advance lets you build the file around each one.
- Purpose of visit not clear: no itinerary or invitation, or a trip that does not fit your profile. Fix: a precise cover letter, bookings and a host letter.
- Insufficient or unexplained funds: low balances, sudden deposits, statements not in your name. Fix: 4-6 months of consistent statements and source-of-funds explanations.
- Weak ties to the home country: no job, no property, whole family already in Canada. Fix: employment letter with approved leave, business documents, property deeds, evidence of dependants who stay behind.
- Limited travel history: strengthen every other pillar, or travel to other countries first.
- Inconsistent information: dates or employment that differ between IMM 5257, IMM 5707, earlier applications and documents. Fix: review every form line by line against your passport.
- Undeclared refusals, overstays or misrepresentation: hiding a refusal from Canada, the US or Schengen countries is misrepresentation under section 40 and brings a 5-year ban. Fix: declare everything and explain what has changed.
If you have been refused, do not simply resubmit the same file. Request the GCMS notes through a Canadian representative to see the officer's actual reasoning, then reapply with new evidence addressing each point, or seek judicial review at the Federal Court within the deadlines (15 days for decisions made inside Canada, 60 days outside). Our article on Canada visa refusal reasons and how to reapply covers this in depth.
How VisaPres can help with your Canada visitor visa
A visitor visa looks simple, but it is a persuasion exercise judged by an officer who spends minutes on your file. VisaPres has prepared visitor, super visa and family-visit applications for clients from Jordan, the Gulf, Iraq, Egypt, Syria and Lebanon for more than two decades, and every file is reviewed by our RCIC before submission.
Working with a regulated consultant does not guarantee approval, and anyone who promises one should be avoided. What it does is remove avoidable refusal grounds: incomplete forms, undocumented funds, missing translations and a weak explanation of ties. Our visitor visa legal assistance includes:
- Eligibility assessment and a personalised document checklist
- Completion and validation of IMM 5257, IMM 5707 and the online application in your IRCC account
- Drafting the cover letter, an invitation letter template for your host and source-of-funds explanations
- Certified translation of Arabic documents accepted by the Canadian Embassy
- Guidance on biometrics appointments at the VAC in Amman or any VFS Global centre in the region
- Post-refusal support: GCMS notes request, reapplication strategy and referral for judicial review
